Opting Out of The 9-5 In Style
I sometimes wonder why everyone isn’t opting out of the 9-5 and running an online business. I mean, do people actually enjoy commuting to and from a job they don’t actually enjoy? Do they seriously want to spend 8hrs or more a day, 5 or more days a week with people they don’t especially like. Do they appreciate being part of a hierarchy with people they consider idiots above and below them?
Well clearly some do and in fairness not all jobs, bosses and co-workers are awful. But there are loads of surveys and stats suggesting that the vast majority of us don’t actually find the traditional model: Working for 40 hours a week (or more) for 40 years (or more) to retire (hopefully) on 40% of our final salary all that fulfilling. The vast majority of us just stick with it through ignorance of any alternative.
The truth is that until quite recently there really has been no practical alternative to exchanging time for money in the traditional way. Opting out of the 9-5 to start a business has traditionally been beyond most of us for reasons of cost. Fear and conditioning also play a big part. A business is risky whereas a job, whilst far from ideal financially or in terms of quality of life, is at least reliable. Or at least it used to be. Opting out of the 9-5 now though has never been easier or smarter.
Opting Out of The 9-5 (A Shrewd Move)
In these days of automation, artificial intelligence and disruptive business models is any job really secure? Is any traditional business safe? Opting out of the 9-5 is actually a shrewd move. Microsoft founder Bill Gates famously said “If your business is not on the internet your business will be out of business”. How right he was. The truth is that the world’s biggest businesses are now entirely on the Internet. Look at companies like Facebook, Google, Airbnb, Uber and Netflix. They don’t actually own any of the content, accommodation, transport or entertainment they make billions from.
Many of the products sold on Amazon are marketed by work from home Internet business owners. A gazillion goods and services are sold online by affiliate marketers. Working online from anywhere you can access broadband – you can have Amazon handle everything for you. So I ask again – why isn’t everyone opting out of the 9-5 and running an online business? For some it’s the fear factor and unfortunately that’s for the individual to overcome. For others it is ignorance – by which I mean they just don’t know how. That’s easier to deal with.
